The shop, which has been open for three years, was picked for the honour after being visited by four judges from the National Green Apple panel in September.

They were impressed with the range of eco-friendly cleaning products, such as bicarbonate of soda and lemon sink cleaner, and with its wildlife garden, including a newt colony rescued by Juliet and her staff. The prize of a wooden, scented apple on a plinth was given to Juliet by theatre actress Janie Dee on a balcony overlooking the Thames.

Juliet said: "We walked right through the Houses of Parliament. "The halls and the paintings on the walls and ceilings are out of this world."

The Herbs, Gardens and Health shop was also commended for its organic foods, wild bird food, bird boxes and wildflower seeds.
