Taking Supplements is Good For You!
It is becoming increasingly recognised that diet and nutrition play an important role in maintaining health and preventing disease, and that dietary supplements are a popular source of essential nutrients. However, there has been some concern recently over the potential adverse effects of taking large amounts of supplements, some of which contain more than the recommended daily intake of some vitamins and minerals. A new study published in the Nutrition Journal however has found that those who take more supplements are much healthier than those who take a basic multivitamin and mineral alone or no supplements at all. The study found that long term users of a combination of many dietary supplements; such as B complex vitamins, vitamins C, D and E, zinc, essential fats (e.g. omega 3,6, and 9), probiotics, lecithin, co-enzyme Q10, glucosamine, garlic, saw palmetto, and other immune supporting herbs; were more likely to have lower blood pressure, lower homocysteine levels, more favourable cholesterol levels and a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes than those who did not take supplements or took just a basic multivitamin and mineral. Biological Psychology, 2007 Jan;7 4(1): 39-45 So, with the winter ahead of us, why not review the supplements you are taking, or start taking some now if you aren’t? Everyone should take a basic multivitamin and mineral. Take one that’s high in the B vitamins if you have a stressful life, such as Quest Super Once-a-Day. Extra vitamin C works well with the B vitamins when the body is under stress, too, and also helps to boost the immune system up to resist colds and flu. Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium into the bones. Our bodies absorb it from the sun, but in the winter it’s a good idea to take it in supplement form. Vitamin E helps with circulation, so it’s good to take in the winter to help prevent chilblains if you are prone to them. Please ask us for information on the other supplements mentioned and have a happy, healthy winter!............................................................................................................. Weight Loss Course Starting Soon Want to lose Weight?
As a nation we’re told we’re getting fatter, yet more people are dieting than ever before, so how can this be? The simple truth is that standard dieting just doesn’t work, at least not in the long term. Apart from doing little to educate us towards healthy eating, they do not take into account the reason for the weight problem in the first place. And when you consider many overweight people actually eat less, not more than they should, this surely calls for a different approach? Of course the quantity and quality of food we eat plays a significant part in any weight loss programme, but there are many other factors to consider. 6 week Healthy Weight Loss Course starting soon! Understanding what can affect your weight is key to helping you take control and shifting those extra pounds. And so, at Herbs, Gardens & Health we are launching a new 6 week Healthy Eating Weight Loss Course. Run by Debbie Sturge Nutritional Therapist, the course is structured to discuss a different topic each week – common factors that contribute to weight problems, with plenty of sensible dietary & lifestyle advice to address them. To run as a small, supportive group (places limited to 6), the focus will be on lasting weight loss, tailored to your specific needs. Body fat percentage will be taken alongside weight at the beginning and end of the course and an introductory pack, given at week 1, will include basic guidelines, recipes and menu plans. So, if you’re fed up trying to lose weight & want to try something different, learn how. And as a bonus, feel healthier & more energised too! Talk By Dr. Marilyn Glenville
Those of us able to hear Dr Glenville's very professional and informative talk on Women's Health Matters feel very grateful to Juliet for organising yet another very successful and useful evening for us (which also included another of her generous buffets!) Dr Glenville based her talk on the necessity to maintain blood sugar levels throughout the day by eating "little and often" - never more than 3 hours without a healthy energising snack, plenty of drinks and sensible exercise- in order to maintain energy levels, overcome stress and prevent the many unpleasant effects of ageing. As this affects us all sooner or later, this very commonsense approach to general health for women of whatever age struck chords for all of us present. Dr Glenville explained how the " roller coaster" of "feast and famine" diets or going for hours without food, then having a large meal, affect insulin and cholesterol levels causing the body's systems to react violently and to our detriment, both in our daily lives and for our long term health. Her advice included the following tips - 1. Eat breakfast and then every 3 hours throughout the day, have a snack or meal to include some protein, especially soya, legumes (and egg or fish) as well as fibrous fruits and vegetables. 2. Do not add sugar (nor artificial sweeteners which can increase appetite). Avoid processed and over refined foods, and do not store foods in plastics or cling film which can leach toxins. 3. Do eat essential fats and oils, or you will literally "dry out". She recommends Omega 3 oils (not liver oils which again may contain toxins). Avoid hard or hydrogenated transfats which can harden cells, including brain cells and has vascular implications. 4. Do not eat in a hurry; take time to chew food well. Do drink more water and herbal teas, less alcohol and no caffeine. 5. Do take comprehensive supplements, especially a good multivitamin and mineral combination. She recommends NUTRI PLUS. 6. Do exercise to maintain bone density, mobility etc. 7. Do take time for yourselves, time to relax, eat properly, (even go to the toilet properly) and find time to laugh. If you unfortunately missed her talk, Herbs Gardens and Health are stocking both her many very detailed and well researched books (see details in the last "Naturally Yours") and the very comprehensive supplements, which she recommends and has patented under her own Natural Health Practice brand name. By Pam Piggott Thanks Pam! Watch this space for details of future talks. ............................................................................................................. Cold Sores
Lysine: Cold sores are a viral infection, part of the herpes family and once you are infected, it remains in your system forever. Outbreaks of sores occur on the edge of the lips, especially when we are under stress, suffering with a cold, exposed to chill winds or bright sunshine. The amino acid, lysine, has been shown to prevent the recurrence of, and speed recovery from, cold sores. Another amino acid in the body, arginine, promotes the cold sore virus and lysine works by blocking the activity of arginine. Supplementing with lysine and reducing the intake of arginine-rich foods is an effective weapon against the cold sore virus. Foods to avoid include: nuts and seeds and chocolate. Bio-Propolis Cold Sore Barrier Ointment or Silicea Lip Herpes Gel can be applied to help cold sores heal. Too many men ignore their prostate.
A.Vogel/Bioforce has just published the results of a survey designed to establish men’s attitudes to prostate problems. The nationwide survey found that six out of ten men would wait to see if a problem eased before seeking medical assistance, with one in ten waiting until the symptoms became intolerable before seeing a doctor - while some would even refuse medical help completely for any complaint. The research points to the likelihood that around 25% of men would simply try to live with the problem. It is unsurprising to hear that those suffering from urinary discomfort highlight disturbances to their sleep patterns (22.7%) and the need to be near the toilet (15.%). It can also have an impact on stress levels (10%). The results also uncovered a shocking lack of knowledge of the condition, with 78.3% of those surveyed unaware of what enlarged prostate was! Over 60s are most likely to have heard about it (64.2%) compared to the 40-49 age bracket, where 86.6% had not heard of the condition. Results have also revealed significant misconceptions around the treatment for enlarged prostate - 29.3% believing surgery to cut away the enlarged prostate gland as a cure with only 6% of respondents pointing to herbal remedies as a potential treatment. Dr Jen Tan, Bioforce Medical Director, commented: "It is essential that anyone suffering the symptoms of an enlarged prostate – weak urinary flow, frequency and getting up several times in the night – should seek advice from their doctor. Once the condition is diagnosed as benign, an ideal remedy is the licensed medicine, Prostasan, which comes in the form of a one a day capsule made from the oil of the Saw palmetto berry. It is well worth considering." .............................................................................................................
