“The Meatrix” website address was sent to me recently by Kate and Vince who run Innerlight Supergreens in this country. They said, “We feel it is important and so well presented we wanted you all to have a look and forward it to anyone who wants to know.”

It is an excellent animated “Movie” made along the lines of The Matrix, to raise awareness about intensive animal farming. Neo is a pig living on a lovely little farm in the countryside (or so he thinks). Moopheus (a cow) tells him this is not the real world, it’s the Meatrix, and shows him the truth about intensive farming.

The Meatrix is a product of the first-ever Free Range Flash Activism Grant, awarded to GRACE (Global Resource Action Center for the Environment). GRACE works to end the destructive and dangerous practices of factory farming and to promote sustainable agriculture - a goal close to Free Range's heart. Reform of the farming industry would mean significant gains in many of the areas Free Range fights for: health, food safety, economic justice, workers' rights, environmental integrity and animal rights.

Courtesy of Mrs. Lewis, try this recipe out for Christmas. It’s versatile, and Mrs. Lewis has given us several variations here, but you should be able to adapt it yourself for most special dietary requirements, if necessary.
Mix together the following:
100g All Bran/Oat Bran
100g Soya Flour
100g Brown Sugar
200g Dried Fruit
1½ tablespoons Baking Powder
300g Soya Milk
Let it rise for ½ hour. Heat the oven to 180ºC, gas mark 4. Line a cake tin with grease proof paper and a little olive oil. Bake for 1 hour.
Options: As above but replace some of the milk with the zest and juice of 2 oranges or lemons. Dried fruit can be replaced with chopped nuts/pine seeds and sesame seeds, or chopped organic prunes/apricots/figs. A few drops of vanilla or almond extract may be added, or, for the Festive Season, Brandy!

Well, I must say, I’ve been VERY fortunate this month! One morning I saw a Great Spotted Woodpecker, pecking about, up and down the trunk of our Willow tree, then, another day I opened the little back door of the shop because I heard something singing. It was a Robin, sitting on the fence, coming to eat the food I’d put on the bird table. THEN I saw movement under our new bridge. I crept up and saw a bird pecking around our bog garden. It looked like a Wagtail with yellow underneath, so I thought it must be a Yellow Wagtail, but when I looked in my books I found it to be a Grey Wagtail, which still has yellow underneath, but not as bright as the Yellow Wagtail. It says in the books that it likes rivers and streams!
