Dear Reader,

Here is the Oct-Dec 2004 issue of Naturally Yours Newsletter from Herbs, Gardens & Health

You Are What You Eat

Dr Gillian McKeith is an internationally acclaimed clinical nutritionist that many stars turn to, including Jennifer Aniston and Demi Moore. Along with Hollywood's hot list, she also attracts clients from Olympic athletes to members of the royal family. She's kept busy writing books and columns, appearing on TV, or looking after her own food product range.

Although Gillian has clinics in the U.S and lives in London, she grew up away from the bright lights in the Scottish Highlands, where her lifestyle and diet were very different. When she was younger her favourite treats included plenty of stodgy and pre-packaged food like chips, chocolate and crisps - food she's now more likely to make people bin!

Her life changed when she moved to America in her twenties and became the presenter of a successful health interest radio show. Ironically, she says that at the time she was the 'least healthy person I knew', and suffered from headaches, spots and tiredness. Then she discovered the benefits of wholesome eating and became passionate about the difference it could make.

Nicknamed the Queen of colonic irrigation, Gillian's not afraid of telling it like it is: "Until I started making this show, I had no idea just how badly some people eat. People put so much rubbish in their bodies and they don't see the connection between this and their ailments."

If you want to know more, you can buy the “You Are What You Eat” book by Dr Gillian McKeith price £12.99 from us. Tel: 01843 600201 as we haven't yet put it on the website.

Healthy Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are a very good source of the minerals zinc, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, protein and of monounsaturated fat. Pumpkin seeds have anti-inflammatory benefits in Arthritis. These seeds also contain chemical substances called cucurbitacins, which may help prevent prostate enlargement. The zinc Pumpkin seeds contain is a mineral also used by healthcare practitioners to help reduce prostate size, making them doubly useful for this condition. Sunflower Seeds. Looking for a health-promoting snack? A handful of sunflower seeds will take care of your hunger, while also enhancing your health by supplying significant amounts of vitamin E, magnesium and selenium. Vitamin E travels throughout the body neutralising free radicals that would otherwise damage fat-containing structures and molecules, such as cell membranes, brain cells, and cholesterol. By protecting these cellular and molecular components, vitamin E has significant anti-inflammatory effects that result in the reduction of symptoms in asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, conditions where free radicals and inflammation play a big role. Vitamin E has also been shown to reduce the risk of colon cancer, help decrease the severity and frequency of hot flushes in women going through menopause, and help reduce the development of diabetic complications.

Aromatherapy For Period Problems: Third in a Series by Andrea Bellamy, Complementary Therapist

I have noticed how often aromatherapy oils have warnings on them not to be used during pregnancy and how they can affect the menstrual cycle in women. They have many uses for hormonal symptoms and I personally believe this is one area where aromatherapy shows its strengths. The mere fact that certain oils should be avoided during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester says quite a lot.

Oils referred to in this way are able to encourage menstruation hence the warning, but this can also work in a positive way as I have discovered when using oils such as lavender, rosemary and clary sage with intent to encourage menstruation for a client wishing to time her period around her holiday. It seemed to work quite well on more than one occasion.
Such oils would be used to regulate scanty periods but would be best avoided by those whose periods tend to be on the heavy side.

On the other side of the scale oils such as geranium and cypress have a regulating effect on the menstrual cycle and can therefore reduce the intensity of the period for those who suffer with heavy periods.

Geranium is a favourite oil for pre - menstrual syndrome as it is excellent for fluid retention and has a balancing effect on the hormones.
It can reduce the effects of pre - menstrual tension such as irritability and mood swings. I find its aroma wonderfully warm and calming, this in itself is enough to make a difference.
Period pain is another commonly experienced problem which aromatherapy can help with. Used as a compress, in the bath or gently massaged into the abdomen lavender, camomile and marjoram are excellent for calming and releasing period pain whilst adding a feeling of warmth and relaxation. Heat is very helpful for period pain and a good tip is to add a few drops of lavender on to a wheat bag heating it and resting it on the abdomen.

Erratic periods respond well to aromatherapy but it would be best to seek advice from a qualified aromatherapist as to which oils to use on which days of the menstrual cycle in order to get the best results.

If you suffer from any problem with your periods it is worth investigating all the herbal treatments which can help and also the effect of the diet.
Too much sugar in the diet can make periods heavy and hormones erratic.

The best way to use aromatherapy for period problems is to see a qualified aromatherapist who will do a case history to provide a treatment which suits the clients individual requirements.

SHOCK HORROR NEWS - "DRUGS DON'T WORK" DRUG COMPANY EXECUTIVE DOES A 'RATNER'!

One of our suppliers, Good Health Naturally, recently sent us a newsletter containing the following article which I thought you might find interesting.
“An executive of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Mr Allen Roses recently declared that "90% of all prescription drugs are effective for only 30% - 50% of those who use them". This means that they are claiming they only work for less than 1 in 3 patients.
What this really means is that not only may the drugs be useless, but worst they may be dangerous and cause untold side effects.
Everyday in our office we speak to those who really thought that we had a health service and that when they went into the doctor's surgery they would come out with something that would make them healthy. That is what it is called "A Health Service". What they report back to us is at best a 'Disease Care Service' where no attempt is made to get them healthy. Rather they are just given drugs that at best relieve the symptoms and at worst leave them worse off with side effects. Official figures show that tens of thousands are harmed or killed by prescription drugs in the UK every single year. No evidence has been found that nutrients are bad for you and cause such problems yet the establishment is constantly trying to ban them - Why?
An example is the care for diabetes. The cause of diabetes is agreed by all independent scientists around the world to be eating starch carbohydrates (bread and potatoes in the main). Yet when a person goes to the surgery for help they are told to include starchy carbohydrates in the so called "balanced diet'. This ensures the person will eventually need drugs. All independent studies show that by stopping eating high starch foods there is no need for drugs and the diabetes will never be a problem. Instead they get into drugs, eat the wrong diet and end up going blind, nerve problems in their feet and dying prematurely compared to the rest of the population.
Every day we get calls asking "can they take SerraZyme or Pure Focus with their drugs?" We tell them basically yes but if they will change their lifestyle then the cause of their disease will go and they can negotiate stopping drugs with their healthcare provider. This applies to many so called diseases. They are caused by the food we are eating.
The moral of the story? 99% of all drugs are needed because we are just not taking in enough nutrition and we are eating the wrong diet.”

Wildlife Garden

Well, the ponds have certainly been topped up! The wetland area is in it’s height of glory with Purple Loosestrife and Hemp Agrimony in full bloom. Baby frogs jump out from everywhere, but we still haven’t seen any baby newts. Not that we’ve really been looking for them, because we haven’t disturbed the pond at all since before spring. We do need to pull out some blanket weed now, though, and tidy it all up a bit, so we’ll see what we find then.

We have seen several Dragonfly nymphs in the pond, probably from the huge Dragonfly we watched dipping it’s tail in and laying eggs last year, on a lovely sunny day when my parents and Stephen’s children were all here to see it!
