Winter Oils. Seventh and Final Part of a Series by Andrea Bellamy, Complementary Therapist

When I am doing my aromatherapy order I often notice that at different times I use certain oils more regularly. In the summer, I have to take great care when using the citrus oils as they can cause the skin to burn if used in the sun.

So, when the weather changes I get a great burst of enthusiasm for the citrus oils and find I use them a lot more, after all my clients seem to miss them. Sometimes choosing the right oils is intuitive. If a client has a fancy for particular oil that day, it can indicate that it has properties that might be relevant at that particular time, or perhaps after talking to the client some of the oils may jump out at me in the same way and I never ignore the feeling. Oil preference is a very personal thing and as an Aromatherapist, I can go straight to the oil to suite my need though it is of course a lot more difficult to choose for someone else.

When it comes to the winter many oils are chosen for their anti viral qualities (covered in recent articles) but as it gets more festive, I like to introduce oils with a more seasonal aroma used in its resin form it has been burnt in temples for centuries. As oil for meditation, it is perfect due to its ability to slow the breath and therefore relax and calm the mind.

It is particularly useful at this time of year for respiratory infections such as bronchitis, coughs and catarrh.

Frankincense has been used for centuries to preserve the skin and is used in cosmetic formulas for the prevention of wrinkles.
Myrrh is often paired with frankincense as it has similar qualities and aroma. As well as being used for respiratory infections, it has exceptional healing qualities for wounds and bacterial skin conditions such as athlete’s foot.

I often like to use the richer more festive citrus oils such as orange or mandarin to increase the quality of the aroma and are particularly fragrant when used in burners, nice in the background for social gatherings. Juliet sells a wide range of aromatherapy oils so why not pop in and see what takes your fancy.

As you may be aware Herbs, Gardens, and Health now has Jane Henry working in the new therapy room and I have decided to pass my regular feature over to her, as it seems more appropriate.

Jane is also qualified in Aromatherapy and I would like to take the opportunity to wish her good luck for her future.

Thank you for reading my articles and I wish you all good health for the future season.

Andrea Bellamy Complementary Therapist can be contacted at Kreative Kutts 43a High St, St Peters, Tel 01843 867546

Thank you, Andrea for this and all the other articles you have written in this column, and for being so considerate.
Best wishes, Juliet

Christmas Hair Colour?

Hair Colours We must now be selling over twenty natural hair colours per week via our website. We receive lots of positive comments about how well they work and keep the hair in good condition, when the customers re-order. These customers are from all over the world, many from the USA. They don’t seem to be able to get natural hair colours over there. We keep in stock the full range of these colours in order to satisfy these orders, but we are lucky to sell just one per week in-store! The Naturtint Permanent range is free of ammonia and resorcinol, although it does contain the minimum amount of PPD (an ingredient some people have a reaction to) necessary to make it truly permanent and to offer 100% grey cover. We also have the Henna Plus range, which is totally chemical free, and ideal for those with sensitivities. So, come on guys and gals, what colour do you fancy for Christmas? Something different?

Wheatgrass

What Is Wheatgrass?
Wheatgrass is a cereal plant that is rich in nutrients, which human beings can digest if the wheatgrass is juiced. It is believed that the nutritional benefits of wheatgrass are at their optimum when the shoots are between 7-10 days old.
A versatile superfood that works on two levels:
1. As a tonic or pick-me-up when energy levels are flagging
2. As a superfood to help nourish and restore the body's natural balance
Nutritional Features:
- Contains vitamins A, C and B, well balanced and in a form easily assimilated by the body
- Offers a broad spectrum of naturally balanced minerals, particularly zinc, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium and selenium
- Contains all eight essential amino acids and most non-essential amino acids
- A spoonful of freeze-dried wheatgrass is thought to be nutritionally equivalent to eating 750g of organic vegetables
- Provides an excellent source of digestible vegetable protein (43% protein when juice is freeze-dried compared with oats 15%, wheat 14% and tofu 5%)
- Contains good levels of chlorophyll
Benefits:
- Vitamin A (as betacarotene) - helps maintain good eyesight, reproductive functions, growth and development
- Vitamin C - helps protect against the free radical damage that can lead to degenerative illness
- Zinc - helps maintain healthy skin and strengthen the immune system, the prostate and the eyes
- Phosphorous - helps maintain nerve health
- Calcium - provides strong bones and teeth and helps restore the blood pH balance
- Magnesium - aids good muscle function and bowel health
- Chlorophyll - acts as a powerful detoxifier, purifier and antibacterial agent
- Aids weight-loss
- Increases energy and mental focus
- Helps clean out toxins and heavy metals
- Good for cell rejuvenation
- Helps eliminate the bacteria that causes bad breath and body odour
- Helps dry out blemishes, such as spots caused by acne
An excellent brand of wheatgrass which is easily accessible for those of us who don't have the equipment, time or inclination to grow and juice wheatgrass at home is Sweet Wheat. Containing pure 100% freeze-dried wheatgrass juice (the water extract from wheatgrass harvested at 7-10 days old), Sweet Wheat is gluten free, contains no fillers, and binders and no enzyme-destroying heat is used in the manufacturing process.
How to use wheatgrass
Powder: ½ teaspoon per day dissolved in 20ml of water or non-citrus fruit juice
Vegicaps: take two capsules daily
As a facial: simply mix into a paste and apply to the skin whenever needed.

Wildlife Garden

The ponds are very full at the moment, and very clear, too, now that all our oxygenators are (very) firmly established.
We have a Blue Tit taking peanuts from our window feeder (as well as “The Dove Squad”, as Stephen calls them; although he didn’t call them that when they knocked the whole thing off the window on Sunday and all the nuts fell out all over the balcony!).
We also have two pairs of Blackbirds and the Parakeets are still occupying the willow tree, as anyone using the Therapy Room will probably notice!
One or two Robins appear from time to time, as well as Dunnocks and Wrens. Been too busy to look out for them lately, but hope to see them again soon. Will keep you posted….
