Aqua Oleum Clove Bud Essential Oil 10ml

Of the three clove oils (bud, leaf and stem), the essential oil distilled from the bud is the safest, due to a lower eugenol content. The buds are handpicked from the trees and dried for 3-4 days prior to distillation. Many types of artificial drying have been tried, but this lowered the yield when compared to the standard sun-drying technique - another example where modern production technology cannot improve on Mother Nature. The green buds lost half their weight during drying, and sometimes more. The essential oil yield from clove buds varies between 16% to 19%.

Picking the clove buds just before they turn pink results in a moisture loss of up to 70% on dry-out but gives quite a high eugenol content.

There is no indigenous production of clove in Europe. The main producing countries are Indonesia, Madagascar, Comores Islands and Zanzibar.

In Indonesia, the leaf oil is used as a cigarette flavour, but over the last few years they have had to import Madagasy material due to a disease affecting their crop. The clove trees in Zanzibar are predominantly wild, and are processed only by locals. The logistics of major companies producing clove on a commercial basis has proved too expensive, but even they agree that the East African material is of a superior quality.
