Aqua Oleum Frankincense Essential Oil 10ml

Aqua Oleum Frankincense Essential Oil 10ml

The essential oil is distilled from the selected gum-resin. In a process similar to the Elemi gum, incisions are made in the bark and a milky juice exudes. This quickly solidifies into what are commonly known as ‘tears’, which possess a pleasant balsamic odour characteristic of B. Carterii. Of the numerous varieties of Boswellia available, the B. Carterii variety is of premier quality. Sourced predominantly from Somalia and occasionally from Yemen. Aden Frankincense has an unpleasant note due to the high alpha-pinene content and as such is not popular within aromatherapy or the perfumery industries. However, it can well supplant turpentine in varnish manufacture and has a high profile in the paint industry.

It can be quite difficult to judge what quality of Frankincense gum to use for essential oil production as there are many grades. We must also take a number of factors into consideration, namely age, appearance, moisture level, olfactory characteristics and essential oil content. The initial grades are:

Grade 1: Oil from ‘tears’ – most carefully selected, white or white yellow in colour.

Ungraded: Oil from a mixture of white/yellow and reddish angulated masses with particles of bark and other foreign substances.

Oil from dust and siftings.

Oil from unsorted gum from the producing regions, will be regarded as another variety, due to then inconsistencies and varieties of foreign material contained in the gum. In these cases the gum is poorly prepared by inexperienced or careless people.

Once in essential oil form, Frankincense can be classified into country of origin by identifying certain constituents.

The following table gives an indication on certain constituents where we are able to identify the originating country . . . . .
