The earliest reference to Lemongrass Oil is found in ancient Sanskrit literature dating back some 2000 years. At the time the leaves and their oil were used in religious ceremonies and also for perfumes.

C. Citratus is probably native of Malaya or Sri Lanka but is now widely distributed throughout the tropics. Steam-distillation of the leaves can take place two or three times per year, the resultant oil being used predominantly in soaps and in the isolation of citral for use in soft drinks. It is also used for the commercial synthesis of Vitamin A.

Some schools are reluctant to use Lemongrass as they are uncertain as to its safety. However, research has yet to highlight any problems with usage. As far as we concerned, assuming the use of a pure oil, care must be taken as there is the possibility of dermal irritation with some individuals.
