Although Somalia provides most of the Myrrh Gum resin, countries like Eritrea, Yemen, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia also produce small amounts. Botanically you will find a number of species apart from our quality, namely

C. Abyssinica and the lesser known C. Molmol, which is erratic in availability and quality.

Myrrh is not a tremendously popular oil in aromatherapy and this is partly due to the difficulties in storage and handling. The oil tends to solidify with age and droppers can easily be blocked or lids on containers get stuck. The only way around this is to minimise the exposure to air where possible.

In recent years the agricultural sector has investigated Myrrh Oil for insecticidal properties. It has proved very successful against the larvae of the tic Rhipicepalus Perndiculatus, responsible for transmitting the dreaded East Coast Fever, which affects African cattle.
