With the improving availability of Ho Wood oil and synthetic linalool, the demand for linalool-rich Rosewood Oil continues to decline at a rapid pace. Add to this the various misleading articles encouraging Aromatherapists to use Ho Wood instead of Rosewood for ‘environmentally sound’ reasons and usage will all but disappear.

As the demise of a natural environment can be caused by the mass destruction or uncontrolled harvesting of an indigenous species of plant, we wholeheartedly agree with the protection or proper management of that species.

It is very misleading to point out, especially from an unqualified source, that one should use Ho Wood oil instead of Rosewood Oil Brazilian. This statement is basically rash for the following reasons:

1. Brazil is not the only source of Rosewood in the world. In fact, the Rosewood oils are available from Peru and Guyana, but unfortunately not available in the same quantities. The Peruvian oil has the additional logistical problem of finding its way across to the main shipping ports on the East coast and the cost is therefore higher. However, there is a controlled harvesting and the farmers are encouraged to replace and potentially expand their plantations to supplement their fruit orchards.

2. By saying one can replace Rosewood oil with Ho Wood oil because of similar linalool constituents, is like saying why not interchange Eucalyptus with Cajuput or Niaouli as all three are high in cineol, or Majoram Sweet with Tea tree with similar terpinen-4-ol content and so on ....
