| Cholesterol lowered by plant sterols + exercise - A research group at McGill University in Canada led by Krista Varady has found that consuming plant-derived sterols in combination with an aerobic exercise regime can produce beneficial changes in blood lipid and cholesterol levels. According to Varady et al. plant sterol supplementation has been shown to reduce both total and LDL-cholesterol concentrations, whereas endurance training increases HDL-cholesterol and decreases triacylglycerol levels. Therefore, their objective was to examine the effect of a combination of plant sterols and endurance training on plasma lipid and lipoprotein cholesterol levels, sterol concentrations and cholesterol precursor concentrations in previously sedentary adults with raised cholesterol levels. The study lasted 8 weeks during which time the 84 subjects were randomly assigned to one of four groups: (1) a combination of exercise and sterols, (2) just exercise, (3) just sterols and (4) controls. Those assigned to the sterol groups were told use the scoops provided to consume four level scoops (22g daily) of Unilever's ProActive margarine which contains plant sterols. The control margarine was VandenBergh Food's Flora Light margarine. The exercise regime involved the use of stair-stepping machines and stationary exercise bicycles. The authors discuss their results in some detail comparing them with those published by other research groups working in similar fields. Overall, Varady's team were able to show that a combination of exercise and plant sterols had a greater beneficial effect on blood lipids than either sterols or exercise alone. Sterol supplementation decreased total cholesterol concentrations by 8.2% from baseline. Exercise significantly increased HDL-cholesterol concentrations by 7.5% and decreased triacylglycerols by 13.3% from baseline.
